XING, a New Work SE subsidiary, is the leading online business network in German-speaking countries and supports its 19 million members in working in line with their way of life and individual preferences. Professionals from every industry connect with one another, look and apply for jobs, and seek inspiration about the latest trends in the world of work. Thanks to the broad news portfolio, XING members can keep their finger on the pulse and discuss the latest developments.

(Senior) Data Scientist (m/f/x)

Our “DISCOvery Data” Data Science & Data Engineering team is responsible for turning data into services and products for the XING Social Network. 9 Data scientists and engineers work together to create highly scalable solutions which serve millions of users.

The primary purpose of our team is to provide as diverse & relevant content possible from the 1st, 2nd (and beyond) degree contacts from our Users Network. In order to do so, we work on problems related to information extraction, user interests mining, recommender and ranking systems, etc. and make use of data mining and machine learning techniques to tackle these problems. We are currently working intensively on projects related to gathering user insights and improving recommender systems and pipelines for automated machine learning.

Therefore, we are seeking an experienced Data Scientist who can help us with the design and development of algorithms/models for our recommender services which are used by our more than 19 Million users. As a Data Scientist, your job does not stop after analysis and model development, but would also consists in contributing to bring these models to production, conducting A/B tests, continuously trying to improve our existing recommender services and experimenting with our data assets to discover new services that may help our users. Flexible remote work is possible.

We are an international team collaborating with people working from multiple locations in Hamburg, Germany, Spain and remote.

A challenging task

  • Design and implement new algorithms and Machine learning models, mostly for recommender, ranking and classification services (involving NLP and embedding models).
  • Contribute to the development of services, batch processes and stream processing components (using programming languages such as Scala, R, Python or SQL and technologies like Spark, Kafka, etc.) to ship algorithms to our end users.
  • Proactively analyze data assets (e.g. tracking data, profiles, job ads, etc.) and experiment to enhance existing services and create new services.
  • Design and implement components in a sustainable fashion (e.g. automating training of ML models; balance between complexity of models, computational costs, ease of use).
  • Contribute to our Data Platform by developing reusable data sets, data processing components, utility functions, etc.

A convincing background

  • MSc or higher degree in Computer Science, Math or similar discipline.
  • Hands-on experience in analyzing large datasets (e.g. with Python, Hive or similar) and developing machine learning models.
  • Deep theoretical and practical knowledge about machine learning and problem domains related to information retrieval (e.g. recommender systems, search).
  • Solid programming skills (preferably in Scala/Java or Python) and motivation to develop sustainable components that have potential to live on for years.
  • Proficient English language skills (German is not required).

Nice to have

  • Experience with developing search and recommender services throughout their lifecycle.
  • Experience with Neural Networks (Tensorflow, Pytorch, Caffe or similar…).
  • Experience with Search algorithms and ML models.
  • Experience with ElasticSearch.
