XING launches “The New Groups” – mobile networking with photos and videos

  • Use mobile networking to start conversations more easily with photos and videos
  • Chief Product Officer Richter: We want to make exchanging knowledge accessible to even more people

Hamburg, March 17, 2014 – This afternoon, XING, the leading professional social network in German-speaking countries (D-A-CH), will be launching “The New Groups”, a reinterpretation of XING’s popular Groups feature, one of the main components on the platform. The New Groups will have a number of modern bonus features, will be accessible from mobile devices for the first time, and will make it much easier to join current discussions. Over two million XING members belong to the more than 66,000 groups, provide each other with valuable tips, and keep each other up to date in their respective fields or interest areas.

The New Groups significantly lowers the barriers for members to take advantage of the service’s benefits. From now on it will be possible to post directly to The New Groups from the home page – the need for complicated navigating and searching has been eliminated. Now members can also post videos and photos to lend more expression to their ideas, opinions, and positions. For the first time, all groups can be accessed from mobile devices using the iPhone or Android app. By allowing for mobile integration, XING has added a feature that members have been looking forward to for a long time. Mobile access to XING has now reached a new record level, currently accounting for 40% of overall traffic. The New Groups will be further developed over the coming weeks and months.

Timm Richter, Chief Product Officer (CPO) at XING, stated: “XING wants to bring together people with similar interests and needs, and inspire them to come up with new ideas in their professional lives.” Particularly in times of radically changing working environments, this is all the more relevant for working professionals. For this reason, in addition to many comprehensive updates, our main concern was to make it easier for people to get involved in group discussions and thus make it possible for even more people to share their knowledge and benefit from the suggestions and ideas of others – at home, in the office, and on mobile devices.”

The New Groups will be available starting later today. Moderators of existing groups can contact us to request that their group be made available in the new format. All discussion threads and memberships will, of course, be completely transferred. The transition phase will last several months, after which all existing groups will be automatically converted to the new format.
